How to Calculate Your GPA Using Percentages
Most schools give you a percentage grade for each class, but report your overall academic standing as a GPA (Grade Point Average) — typically on a 4.0 scale. Most schools weight GPA by credit hours, since a 4-credit course counts more toward your overall average than a 1-credit course. The formula adjusts for that:

Example: Four classes with different credit hours
Biology — 91% (A−, 3.7 points) — 4 credits
English — 85% (B, 3.0 points) — 3 credits
Calculus — 78% (C+, 2.3 points) — 4 credits
Art — 96% (A, 4.0 points) — 2 credits
Step 1 — Multiply grade points by credit hours for each class:
Biology: 3.7 × 4 = 14.8
English: 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
Calculus: 2.3 × 4 = 9.2
Art: 4.0 × 2 = 8.0
Step 2 — Add up the weighted points:
14.8 + 9.0 + 9.2 + 8.0 = 41.0
Step 3 — Add up the total credit hours:
4 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 13
Step 4 — Divide:
41.0 ÷ 13 = 3.15 GPA
Converting a Single Percentage Grade to GPA

Is the percentage-to-GPA scale the same everywhere?
