How Grade Percentages Work

Whether it's a single test, a homework assignment, or a quiz, most grades come down to the same basic percentage calculation: how many points you earned out of how many were possible.

Grade % = (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible) × 100

Example: A test worth 80 points

You scored 68 out of 80 possible points.

Step 1: Divide earned by possible → 68 ÷ 80 = 0.85
Step 2: Convert to a percentage → 0.85 × 100 = 85%

Weighted Assignments & Curves

This calculator handles a single assignment or test. If your overall course grade combines several assignments with different weights (say, homework is 20% of your grade and the final exam is 40%), you'll need to calculate each component separately and then combine them according to their weights — a different (though related) calculation from a single grade percentage. If your test used a curve, keep in mind that a curve adjusts the raw percentage afterward, based on the class's overall performance — this calculator gives you the raw, uncurved percentage, and any curve your instructor applies would be layered on top of that.

A single grade percentage typically converts to a letter grade, which then converts to GPA points. If you're trying to work out your overall GPA across multiple classes, see the full guide below for the weighted GPA formula.
