X Is What Percent of Y?
This calculator answers a different question from a basic "percent of" calculation — instead of finding a percentage of a number, it finds what percentage one number represents of another. It's the formula behind test scores, survey results, and any time you're comparing a part to a whole.
Divide the first number by the second, then multiply by 100 to convert the decimal into a percentage.
Worked Examples
Example 1: 12 is what percent of 40?
Step 1: Divide → 12 ÷ 40 = 0.3
Step 2: Convert to percent → 0.3 × 100 = 30%
Example 2: 45 is what percent of 60?
Step 1: Divide → 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75
Step 2: Convert to percent → 0.75 × 100 = 75%

What's the difference between this and "percent of"?
"What is X% of Y" starts with a percentage and finds a resulting number. "X is what percent of Y" does the reverse — it starts with two numbers and finds the percentage that relates them. They use different formulas because they're solving for different unknowns.
Can the result be over 100%?
Yes — if X is larger than Y, the result will be over 100%. For example, 80 is 160% of 50, since 80 is more than one and a half times 50.
